Frequently Asked Questions
Here are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about eVISION®. If you'd like to know even more, check out our online help.
What securities can I invest in through CFS?
You can invest in mutual funds, stocks, and options online or by phone. Options spreads and straddles can be traded through our registered representatives at no additional charge via telephone.
What is the difference between a cash and a margin account?
With a cash account, you must have full funds in your account prior to placing an order. A margin account allows you to increase your purchasing power by borrowing against the marginable assets in your account, such as stocks and mutual funds held more than 30 days. Our minimum initial deposit is $1,000 for a cash account and $2,000 for a margin account.
I've sent in my application and initial investment. What happens next?
We'll send you a Welcome Letter in the mail within 3 to 5 days containing your user name and password upon receipt and approval. You can then access your account online and begin investing.
What types of orders does CFS accept?
CFS accepts all common types of orders, including market and limit orders, stop and stop limit orders, all-or-none (AON) orders, and good-till-canceled (GTC) orders. Full funds or margin buying power must be available in your account to purchase stocks; full funds must be available to purchase mutual funds. CFS does not allow members to sell naked call options.
Can I invest in mutual funds through CFS?
CFS lets you buy, sell, and exchange mutual funds from many of the most popular fund families.
Can I get checkwriting privileges on my account?
Yes. You can access your cash balances through our low minimum checkwriting privilege ($100 minimum per check). And with a margin account, you can write checks against your marginable securities for a convenient, low-cost personal loan.
How long does it take to transfer my account from another firm into my CFS account?
Transferring an account generally takes from three to six weeks, depending on how quickly your assets are released by your present firm.
How will I be notified of trade executions?
You'll get trade reports online. You'll also receive a paper confirmation in the mail, and all of your online trading and portfolio records will be automatically updated upon execution.
Are any fees added to my account?
You will be charged a standard commission for each trade, and a small fee for any special services you may request, such as sending a stock certificate or wiring funds. See pricing schedule.
Which browsers can I use to access the eVISION online system?
Both 40-bit and 128-bit browsers will work with the encryption protocols used on our website. We recommend Microsoft™ Internet Explorer Version 7.0 or higher. Download the latest version of Internet Explorer.
